A Wye Extension

It has been a long time in development, but at last we are getting our heads around an extending version of our popular Wye table. The problem has been to find a smooth and simple mechanism that enabled the addition of light weight leafs to the table top, without compromising the smooth clean lines of the top or its interface with the leg structures.

In the end the hollow core construction technique used for many of our furniture designs gave us the answer. By incorporating eight ceramic bearings within the table top as it was assembled, we can slide hardened steel shafts into the thickness of the top, then epoxy what would normally be fixed "breadboard" ends onto the shafts. These slide beautifully, and when extended will support the shaped extension leaves.

By running the face veneers continuously across the leaves and central top in one pressing, then knifing at the join line, the whole presents as a virtually seamless top on assembly.

The first one has definitely been a step by step trial process, but the final result has exceeded expectations, and we look forward to adding the Wye Extension with full timber top to our range of tables
